About Rail Pass combined use

I would like to use my JR EAST PASS (Nagano,Niigata area) with this ticket. Can I travel from Nagano Station to Dentetsu-Toyama Station, and then return to Tokyo Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen?

Because the Toyama-Joetsumyoko interval on the Hokuriku Shinkansen is outside the JR EAST PASS (Nagano, Niigata area) designated ride area, a separate boarding ticket and limited express ticket (adults: 5,050 yen for a regular season reserved seat) must be purchased for this interval.

Note that the Toyama-Joetsumyoko interval is included in the designated ride area of the Hokuriku Arch Pass, so that pass can be used.

Using the Hokuriku Area Pass and an option ticket, is it possible to travel from Dentetsu-Toyama to Nagano, and then return to Toyama/Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen?

The Nagano–Kurobe-Unazukionsen interval on the Hokuriku Shinkansen is outside the Hokuriku Area Pass designated ride area, so separate boarding and limited express tickets (adults: 5,830 yen for an non-reserved seat) must be purchased.

Notes:

  • The Hokuriku Area Pass is for non-reserved seating only.
  • The Nagano–Kurobe-Unazukionsen interval is included in the designated ride area of the Hokuriku Arch Pass, so that pass can be used.
Using the Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass and an option ticket, is it possible to travel from Dentetsu-Toyama to Nagano, and then return to Toyama/Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen?

The Nagano-Joetsumyoko interval on the Hokuriku Shinkansen is outside the Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass designated ride area, so separate boarding and limited express tickets (adults: 2,810 yen for an non-reserved seat) must be purchased.

Notes:

  • The Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass is for non-reserved seating only.
  • The Nagano-Joetsumyoko interval is included in the designated ride area of the Hokuriku Arch Pass, so that pass can be used.

About the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

Can the trip be done in a single day from Tokyo or Osaka?

Traveling the route in one day is not recommended.

It generally takes six or seven hours to travel the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. In addition, an extra hour or two is generally required on weekends and holidays throughout the year due to congestion. The season for Yuki no Otani, the wall of snow, in April and May is often particularly busy with visitors from around the world, and the boarding wait times may be a number of hours. Also, there are many sightseeing locations along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, and we recommend leaving adequate time to enjoy them and for spending the night in a nearby hotel or hot springs area.

What sort of accommodation options are available?
There are many hotels and hot spring ryokan (inns) located near Nagano Station, Shinano-Omachi Station (Omachi Onsen Village), Murodo Station, Midagahara bus stop, Kurobe-Unazukionsen Station, Toyama Station and Kanazawa Station.
Are there timetables?

Notes:

  • Delays may occur on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route due to congestion, resulting in missing the connection for the last departure as shown on the timetable. We recommend leaving adequate time in your itinerary to cover such contingencies.
  • When wishing to depart from Dentetsu-Toyama Station to reach Nagano Station on the same day, please ensure you take the train from Dentetsu-Toyama Station no later than 11 o'clock.
  • When wishing to depart from Nagano Station to reach Dentetsu-Toyama Station on the same day, please ensure you board the bus departing from Nagano Station no later than 12:30 between April 15 and November 5 and no later than 10:30 between November 6 and 12.
  • When using the hand luggage delivery service, extra time is required for pick-up. Please arrive at the station early.
Is luggage delivery service available?

For a charge of 1,300 to 2,200 per piece, luggage can be sent from Nagano, Shinano-Omachi, Tateyama and Dentetsu-Toyama Stations to nearby hotels or back again.

For further details, refer to the Alpine Route website.

About clothing and the weather

April to June

The temperature at the end of April generally ranges from as low as -5 to -10 degrees Celsius to a degree or two above freezing, though walking is good for warming up the body. As the pathways at Murodo and Midagahara Plateaus are covered in snow, waterproof trekking shoes or boots are needed for walking along them. By mid-June, the temperature rises to about 10–12 degrees Celsius.

July and August

The temperature is about 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, making the Alpine Route excellent for escaping from the summer heat. The pathways are developed for easy walking, but sandals are not recommended due to the hilly terrain.

September and October

When the trees change colors, the temperature is around 10 degrees Celsius, which is often chilly. A windbreaker or other clothing to protect against the cold is recommended. The elevation is about 2,500 meters (around the Murodo Plateau), so snow generally begins to fall around October.

November

The temperature often drops below freezing, so adequate warm clothing is needed. Although buses and trains have warm heaters, as soon as you go outside, it is very cold. Even if you have no plans to walk outdoors, there are places such as the dam for walking on the snow that may tempt you outside, so waterproof footwear with good traction is recommended.

When there is a lot of snow accumulation, transportation lines may be out of service. In such cases, please note that the interval between Nagano and Dentetsu-Toyama Stations may not be passable.
